Diriving Innovation

We nurture unique perspectives and a deep appreciation for driving innovation, as well as the diverse career opportunities that STEM fields can provide. And our legacy is established: in 2015, Wenona became the first girls’ school in NSW to offer Engineering Studies as a Higher School Certificate subject, on campus. A year later, we launched the Stage 5 STEM Elective, a two-year course for Years 9 and 10.

    Fostering STEM Leaders

Wenona reimagines STEM to prepare girls for a lifetime of learning by:

    • Connecting them with industry professionals, researchers, and universities
    • Empowering them to engage in purposeful, real-world research
    • Encouraging them to lead their younger peers in high-quality learning
    • Inspiring them to achieve repeated wins in STEM competitions
    • Fostering their engineering mindset through our much-loved Car Restoration Club.

    Whole-School Learning

STEM learning begins in Kindergarten at Wenona and is woven into most curriculum areas. In the Junior School, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme lends itself to the incorporation of STEM learning in a variety of transdisciplinary units undertaken by each year group. Senior School teachers like Director of STEM, Dr Thompson herself, teach classes to some of the youngest year groups in the Junior School and the older girls, while Years 5 and 6 attend STEM classes on the Senior School campus in the Senior School Science laboratories.

    Real-World Research

Our STEM program has garnered international recognition, exemplified by our recent achievement: earning a spot on the conference abstract of the prestigious 38th International Conference on Coastal Engineering in Rome.

This honour stems from our annual STEM Tours to a pristine research site 100 kilometres off the Queensland coast, where Wenona is the only student group ever granted access.

The students gain invaluable insights into scientific research processes, marine ecosystems, and environmental conservation while contributing meaningfully to ongoing studies on coral reef preservation. Our commitment to providing such extraordinary opportunities sets Wenona apart.

    The Wenona STEM Experience

    • Years 10 and 11 students collaborating with University of Sydney scientists on vital coral reef research
    • Daily snorkelling sessions to observe reef structures firsthand
    • Hands-on experience with cutting-edge research equipment, including drones and GPS technology
    • Advanced data collection using scientific methods
    • Evening lectures by leading researchers on critical topics such as coastal erosion and climate change
    • In-depth data analysis and interpretation in the facility's laboratory.
