Last week, 49 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 showcased their talents at the Sydney Regional Snowsports Championships held at Perisher. Competing across the disciplines of Alpine, Ski Cross, Snowboard, and Moguls, our students demonstrated exceptional skill and sportsmanship.
The Interschools Snowsports Championships offer Australian school students a chance to experience the excitement of competitive Snowsports. These events cater to students of all abilities, including those with disabilities, encouraging participation at both recreational and competitive levels. Each year, over 7,000 students from nearly 700 schools take part in these thrilling competitions.
Wenona proudly competes in three key events: the Sydney Regional Championships, the NSW State Championships, and the Australian Championships. To advance through to the State and Australian Championships, students must meet specific qualification criteria.
Our students have the opportunity to compete individually or as part of a team in nine disciplines: Alpine, Ski Cross, Moguls, Ski Slopestyle, Snowboard Slopestyle, Snowboard GS, Snowboard Cross, Cross Country Relay, and Cross Country Classic.
Preparation for the season has been rigorous. In Term 2, students from Years 3 to 12 engaged in a Snowsports-specific program with our Strength and Conditioning coaches focusing on strength, balance, and coordination. Additionally, our Cross Country team participated in a dry-land roller ski training program, which effectively replicates the techniques used on snow.
The dedication and hard work of our students culminated in outstanding results. Wenona proudly secured six gold, three silver, and three bronze medals. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all participants, especially those who competed for the first time and those who achieved a Top 3 finish!
When asked what she enjoyed most about this competition, Snowsports Co-Captain, Amelie, said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the competition, as it has always been such a fun and enjoyable way to connect with other year groups by cheering them on, both on the sidelines of races and on the podium. I have developed friendships with many girls from younger year groups whilst preparing them for their races or congratulating them for their performance, which has enlightened my experience of the competition overall.”
Our Snowsports team continues to embody the core values of sportsmanship, commitment, pride, and spirit. We are extremely proud of how they represented Wenona, supporting each other on and off the slopes. Their dedication and preparation have fostered a tight-knit community, leading to strong friendships across the team.
“I will definitely miss the relationships it has enabled me to form with girls in other year groups, especially over the past few years. Being able to go to the younger girl’s races and cheer them on and see their joy when they finish has been very special,” said our other Snowsports Co-Captain, Jemma.
We eagerly anticipate their future achievements, including at the upcoming State and National Championships in Weeks 5 and 7 of this term, for those who qualify.
